On 14 March 2017, Askja Energy reported on an Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis (IEEFA) study that set out National Grid’s early concept for the IceLink interconnector between Iceland and Great Britain. The report described IceLink as a planned 1,000 km HVDC subsea cable with around 1,000 MW capacity, expected to connect northern Scotland with south‑eastern Iceland and enable bidirectional electricity trade, including hydropower exports to the UK. The IEEFA analysis projected that IceLink could supply close to 5 TWh per year to the UK and noted that National Grid was at that time projecting project completion as early as 2027, positioning the scheme as a contributor to UK and European interconnection and decarbonisation objectives.
