The Denmark–Norway hybrid interconnector is a proposed offshore multi‑purpose electricity link that would combine cross‑border HVDC trading capacity with direct integration of offshore wind generation in the North Sea. The scheme is being studied jointly by the Danish TSO Energinet and the Norweg...
Energinet and Statnett plan to complete their joint investigation of the proposed Denmark–Norway hybrid interconnector by the end of 2024, delivering a recommendation on whether to proceed with more detailed analyses of the project. The investigation covers technical feasibility and system benefits of a hybrid link bringing offshore wind power ashore via a Danish North Sea energy island and Norway’s Sørvest F area, with the overall aim of enabling a connection that could be ready by around 2035 at the earliest.
By 17 November 2023, Energinet and Statnett had begun cooperating on a joint investigation into the technical feasibility and potential benefits of a new hybrid interconnector between Denmark and Norway, connecting offshore wind areas near a planned Danish North Sea energy island and the Sørvest F area in the Norwegian North Sea. The study also assesses how the link would add a further power trading connection between the Danish and Norwegian electricity markets beyond the existing Skagerrak interconnectors.

In June 2023, Denmark’s and Norway’s energy ministers concluded a political agreement to examine the potential for common North Sea infrastructure solutions for integrating offshore wind power into the energy systems of Denmark, Norway and other northern European countries. This intergovernmental accord provides the policy framework that Energinet and Statnett are now building on with their joint feasibility work on a possible new hybrid interconnector between Denmark and Norway via a Danish North Sea energy island and Norway’s Sørvest F area.
