Asso.subsea completed the installation phase of HOPS’ 110 kV submarine cable replacement project in Croatia, including the southern section that links Prapatna–Medvidbad and Travna–Slatina between the islands of Brač, Hvar and Korčula. Working for contractor Končar on behalf of transmission system operator HOPS, the company transported and installed four 110 kV cable systems totaling about 30 km and approximately 30,500 m of new 630 mm² submarine cables, replacing the old links; HOPS separately noted that the Brač–Hvar–Korčula submarine cable replacement was realised in the same campaign.
As part of the completion of the 110 kV submarine cable project serving, among others, the Travna–Slatina route between Hvar and Korčula, Asso.subsea finished all cable landfall operations at the island landing sites, including those on Brač, Hvar and Korčula. The contractor reports that onshore pull‑in works and three consecutive landing activities were successfully executed despite steep coastal gradients, using preparatory works, HDD pipes at two sites, and specially designed rollers to bring the new cables ashore and secure the shore crossings.
As part of HOPS’ strategic project to replace outdated 110 kV submarine cables serving islands including Hvar and Korčula, Hellenic Cables scheduled completion of the approximately 30 km submarine cable manufacturing campaign at its Corinth, Greece plant by February 2024, providing the new 110 kV HV cable systems and accessories for the Adriatic island interconnections.
On 22 January 2024, Hrvatski operator prijenosnog sustava (HOPS) commenced works to replace the 110 kV submarine cables between Brač–Hvar and Hvar–Korčula, including associated onshore cable sections and the revitalisation of cable houses. The construction campaign, running until mid-June 2024, replaces ageing oil-insulated cables with more environmentally friendly technology to improve long-term security of electricity supply and support renewable energy integration for the islands, including Korčula.
On 22 January 2024, Croatian transmission system operator HOPS commenced works to replace the existing 110 kV submarine cable between the islands of Hvar and Korčula, as part of a project also covering the Brač–Hvar link. The activities include laying and jointing new environmentally friendlier 110 kV submarine cables, replacing the old oil‑insulated cables, and associated works on land sections and cable houses, with the installation campaign planned to continue until mid‑June 2024 to enhance security of electricity supply and support renewable integration on the islands.
Hellenic Cables signed a contract with Croatian contractor Končar Group to supply approximately 30 km of 110 kV high‑voltage submarine cables, accessories and related services for HOPS’ strategic project to replace outdated cable lines in the Adriatic Sea, securing the electricity supply of islands including Hvar and Korčula. This contract makes Hellenic Cables the selected cable supplier for the new 110 kV island-link cables, including the Hvar–Korčula section between Travna on Hvar and Slatina on Korčula.
Hellenic Cables, under a contract with Croatian contractor Končar Group for a HOPS project to replace outdated 110 kV submarine cable lines securing the energy supply of the islands including Hvar and Korčula, planned to start in 2023 the production at its Corinth, Greece facility of approximately 30 km of 110 kV high-voltage submarine cables with accessories and related services.
On 4 November 2022, HOPS issued an international competitive tender inviting bids for the accompanying works needed to realise the 110 kV Brač–Hvar–Korčula cable connection, which includes the Hvar–Korčula link. The notice specified an estimated contract value of HRK 25 million and a contract duration of 15 months from award.
Authority: Vlada Republike Hrvatske · Licence: Concession for special use of maritime domain for construction and operation of the 110 kV submarine cable Hvar–Korčula
On 16 September 2022, a decision was issued granting a concession for the special use of maritime domain for the laying and operation of the 110 kV submarine cable link Hvar–Korčula, covering sections within the cadastral municipality of Pitve in the Municipality of Jelsa (Split-Dalmatia County) and the cadastral municipality of Vela Luka in the Municipality of Vela Luka (Dubrovnik-Neretva County). This regulatory act authorises the Hvar–Korčula interconnector project to construct and use the subsea power cable within the defined maritime area.
Co‑financing for HOPS’ strategic project to rehabilitate 110 kV submarine cables—including the Brač–Hvar–Korčula links and the new 110 kV Hvar–Korčula cable between Travna and Slatina—was secured under Croatia’s EU Recovery and Resilience Plan (RRP/NPOO) in September 2022. The programme, one of 11 HOPS projects in a wider €218.1 million NPOO transmission-modernisation package, provides grant funding from the EU Recovery and Resilience Facility 2021–2026 for an investment of about €59.5 million to replace ageing 110 kV cables serving six Adriatic islands (Hvar, Brač, Korčula, Lošinj, Cres and Krk), improving island supply security and enabling more renewable generation.
