The former Hornsea Zone, within which Hornsea Project One is located, was identified by The Crown Estate as one of nine large offshore wind generation zones around the UK coast during its Round 3 offshore wind seabed leasing process, launched in 2008. This strategic zoning exercise designated the Hornsea area in the southern North Sea off the Yorkshire coast as a major potential offshore wind development zone with multi‑gigawatt capacity.
