By 2022, Hellenic Cables and Van Oord had completed the Hollandse Kust (zuid) Alpha export cable landfalls for TenneT, including horizontal directional drill (HDD) shore crossings of about 500 metres and pull‑ins at the Maasvlakte land station, as part of a 2018–2022 scope that installed 86 km of 220 kV high‑voltage submarine cable for the Alpha grid connection between the offshore platform and the onshore Maasvlakte 380 kV substation.
By February 2022, TenneT had completed the offshore grid link installation and energisation for the Hollandse Kust (zuid) Alpha connection, and reported that the Hollandse Kust Zuid Alpha offshore transformer platform—built to connect the Hollandse Kust (zuid) I and II wind farms to the Dutch onshore high‑voltage grid—was operational in the North Sea off Scheveningen.
In 2021, TenneT commissioned Turner & Townsend to provide project performance assurance services—covering progress monitoring, measurement, and verification during fabrication—for the Hollandse Kust Zuid high-voltage grid connection, including the Alpha and Beta 66/220 kV transformer platforms, to ensure key milestones such as Ready for Sail Away and installation remained on schedule.
DEME Group's cable-laying vessel Living Stone began installation of the first two 220 kV export cables for TenneT's Hollandse Kust Zuid Alpha grid connection in mid-2020, laying two approximately 34 km cables between the Alpha offshore platform and the Dutch mainland. Installation was completed in September 2020.
In September 2020, DEME Group’s cable-laying vessel Living Stone completed installation of the first two export cables for the Hollandse Kust Zuid Alpha grid connection, laying two approximately 34‑kilometre 220 kV AC export cables as part of TenneT’s Hollandse Kust Zuid offshore grid linking the Alpha platform with the Dutch mainland.
On 23 September 2020, the consortium of Van Oord and Hellenic Cables began installing four 220 kV subsea alternating-current export cables for the 1.5 GW Hollandse Kust Zuid offshore wind project, marking the start of offshore export cable laying for TenneT’s Hollandse Kust Zuid offshore grid connection, including the Alpha platform circuits to shore.
Authority: Dutch Minister · Licence: Development Framework update adjusting delivery date for HKZ (zuid) Sites I and II offshore grid connection
On 20 May 2020, the Dutch Council of Ministers adopted a Spring 2020 update of the Development Framework for Offshore Wind Energy that adjusted the delivery date for the offshore grid connection for Hollandse Kust (zuid) Sites I and II, based on an agreement between the permit holder and TenneT. In this updated framework, Table 3 confirms the revised offshore grid delivery date of 31 December 2021 for the Hollandse Kust Zuid Alpha 700 MW AC connection.
On 20 May 2019, Petrofac, acting as contractor to TenneT, awarded Heerema Marine Contractors a contract for the transport and installation of the Hollandse Kust Zuid Alpha 700 MW HVAC offshore transformer platform in the North Sea off the Dutch coast.
Authority: TenneT · Licence: Offshore grid connection agreement for Hollandse Kust Zuid I & II via Hollandse Kust Zuid Alpha platform
On 15 January 2019, Dutch-German transmission system operator TenneT and Swedish utility Vattenfall signed agreements for the offshore grid connection of the 700 MW Hollandse Kust Zuid I and II wind farms via the Hollandse Kust Zuid Alpha offshore transformer platform, formalising the grid connection arrangements between the wind farms and TenneT’s Alpha transmission asset in the Dutch North Sea.
In September 2018, Dutch TSO TenneT selected a consortium of Van Oord and Hellenic Cables to supply and install sea and land 220 kV export cables, as well as associated 66 kV links, for the Hollandse Kust (zuid) Alpha and Beta grid connection projects, providing the transmission link between the offshore transformer platforms and the onshore grid at Maasvlakte.
