The UK Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) granted planning approval for the 576MW Gwynt y Môr offshore wind farm in Liverpool Bay in December 2008, authorising construction of the Round 2 project 13km off the North Wales coast in water depths of 12–28 metres. This development consent enabled RWE npower renewables and its partners to proceed towards offshore construction and subsequent contracting for major components such as turbine foundations and inter-array cabling.
