Following feasibility work on possible UK grid connection points for the GridLink Interconnector, GridLink Interconnector Ltd and National Grid Electricity Transmission assessed several 400 kV substations along the south coast of England. Preliminary studies showed that capacity constraints ruled out much of the south coast, so focus shifted to the Thames estuary near London. Seven potential connection points were shortlisted: Cleve Hill, Coryton, Grain, Kemsley, Kingsnorth, Northfleet East and Rayleigh Main. Further technical and economic assessments determined that the Kingsnorth 400 kV substation presented the fewest constraints and was therefore selected as the preferred UK connection site for GridLink. A grid connection agreement for this Kingsnorth connection was subsequently developed and signed in October 2016.
