Following the start of GridLink project development in early 2015, GridLink Interconnector Ltd requested in May 2015 that the French transmission system operator Réseau de Transport d’Electricité (RTE) carry out a prospective study of possible 400 kV connection points in northern France. RTE evaluated several substations against technical feasibility and the risk of network constraints and reinforcement needs. As a result of this study, Warande substation, located in the Bourbourg commune in the Nord department, was selected as the preferred French 400 kV grid connection site for the GridLink Interconnector. Alternative substations were rejected due to insufficient available capacity and the potential need for significant reinforcement works on the RTE network, which would have posed technical difficulties.
