Greenlink Interconnector Limited published the Greenlink Marine Environmental Impact Assessment Non-Technical Summary on 25 July 2019 which set out the project’s decommissioning approach. The document stated that decommissioning would be considered at the end of the cable’s life and undertaken in accordance with standard industry protocol. The stated objectives were to minimise short- and long-term environmental effects and ensure navigational safety. The EIAR identified preferred options to either remove subsea cables or leave them safely in situ buried beneath the natural seabed, and to leave mattresses and external cable protection in situ where appropriate. The EIAR also noted that the appropriate method would be determined towards the end of the interconnector’s life.
