On 19 April 2024, the Scottish Government Marine Directorate granted Section 36 consent and a Marine Licence for the Green Volt Offshore Windfarm east of the Aberdeenshire coast. The consent authorises construction and operation of a floating offshore wind farm of up to 560 MW (35 turbines at up to 16 MW each) along with its associated offshore transmission infrastructure including export cables, offshore substation platform and inter-array cables. Town and Country Planning consent for the onshore transmission assets, including the onshore cable route and substation near New Deer, was also attained in April 2024 from Aberdeenshire Council. Green Volt became the largest commercial-scale floating offshore wind project to secure full planning approval.
