In November 2022, project partners Flotation Energy and Vårgrønn submitted a formal leasing application under Crown Estate Scotland’s Innovation and Targeted Oil and Gas (INTOG) leasing round for two floating offshore wind projects, Green Volt and Cenos. This submission marked a key early-development milestone in securing seabed rights for Green Volt, positioning the project within the dedicated INTOG framework aimed at decarbonising offshore oil and gas operations. The application followed Crown Estate Scotland’s earlier announcement of the INTOG leasing round, which created a route for innovative and targeted decarbonisation projects on the UK Continental Shelf. The November 2022 leasing application built on several years of preparatory work by Flotation Energy. In 2019 the developer identified an area of the UK Continental Shelf with oil and gas platforms that had long field lives and high electrical loads, viewing it as an ideal starting point to replace inefficient offshore gas-fired generation with renewable electricity from floating wind. In 2020, environmental surveys began on a redundant oil and gas field in the area, confirming the potential to develop a floating wind farm in 90–100 metre water depths with a high-quality wind resource. In 2021, Flotation Energy worked with regulators on the potential for Green Volt and submitted an Environmental Scoping report to Marine Scotland, while Crown Estate Scotland announced the new INTOG leasing round, setting the stage for the November 2022 lease application that formally advanced Green Volt and Cenos within this process.
