Detailed feasibility and commercial studies for the Saudi–Greek HVDC electricity interconnection, commissioned by SAUDI GREEK INTERCONNECTION S.A. following the 2024 tender award, are reported as ongoing and expected to be finalized in April 2026.
In July 2025, a Project Feasibility/Preliminary Project Viability Report for the Saudi–Greek HVDC interconnector was completed, providing an initial recommendation on the project’s viability based on interim economic and commercial modelling using the Plexos tool and informing stakeholders about the interconnection’s prospects.
In October 2024, SAUDI GREEK INTERCONNECTION S.A. completed the tender process for the Greece–Saudi Arabia HVDC interconnector feasibility studies and signed a contract with the selected contractor to carry out the commercial feasibility work budgeted at €1.5 million.

On 23 July 2024, Grid Telecom (IPTO’s telecom subsidiary) and Dawiyat Integrated (a Saudi Electricity Company subsidiary) signed a Memorandum of Understanding in Athens for a strategic collaboration to develop a new high-capacity subsea cable system linking Saudi Arabia with Crete in Greece and onward to major destinations in Europe and the Arabian Peninsula.
In April 2024, the special purpose company SAUDI GREEK INTERCONNECTION S.A., a 50/50 joint venture between IPTO and Saudi Arabia’s National Grid, launched a tender for the assignment of commercial feasibility studies for the planned HVDC electricity interconnection between Greece and Saudi Arabia, with a total budget of €1.5 million.
On 5 February 2024, the special purpose company Saudi Greek Interconnection S.A. was formally established as a 50/50 joint venture between Greece’s Independent Power Transmission Operator (IPTO) and Saudi Arabia’s National Grid Company. The SPV was created to conduct the feasibility study for the planned HVDC electricity interconnection between Greece and Saudi Arabia, under a strategic energy cooperation framework overseen by the two countries’ energy ministries.
On 27 September 2023, Greece’s Independent Power Transmission Operator (IPTO) and Saudi Arabia’s National Grid S.A. signed a Shareholders’ Agreement in Athens to establish the special purpose company Saudi Greek Interconnection S.A. This agreement set out the future 50/50 ownership structure and marked the first concrete step toward maturing the planned Greece–Saudi Arabia HVDC electricity interconnector by creating the vehicle that will undertake feasibility and related studies.
In July 2022, Greece and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia signed a high-level Memorandum of Understanding on energy-sector cooperation, providing the political and strategic framework under which the Saudi Greek Interconnection electricity project is being advanced.
