Onshore construction for the Greater Gabbard grid connection near Sizewell/Leiston in Suffolk began in July 2008, marking the start of civil works for the new onshore substation and buried 132 kV cable route that link the offshore wind farm to the UK transmission system. The onshore works comprised installation of underground cables between the cable landfall and the substation site on agricultural land and construction of a new substation adjacent to the existing overhead transmission infrastructure at Sizewell, which later formed part of the Greater Gabbard offshore transmission assets connecting into National Grid’s network at Leiston.
