Siemens Energy has been selected as the preferred contractor to deliver the onshore HVDC converter stations for the Great Sea Interconnector section between Cyprus and Greece (Crete). The scope covers the design, manufacture and construction of the ±500 kV VSC converter stations at each end of the 1,000 MW interconnector, enabling efficient bidirectional power exchange between the Cypriot and Greek grids and, in later stages, integration with Israel. The converter stations are critical components of the 898 km Cyprus–Crete link, transforming AC power from the national grids into DC for subsea transmission and back to AC on receipt. This appointment positions Siemens Energy to execute the EPC works for the converter systems once final contracts are concluded, supporting the project’s goal of ending Cyprus’s electrical isolation and strengthening regional energy security.
