Gotland 3 is part of the Gotland–Sweden HVDC cable system between Västervik and Ygne. The final configuration is a 150 kV, 260 MW link, with Gotland 3 providing an additional 130 MW monopole cable over a route of about 98 km.
NKT, through its legacy high-voltage cable business, delivered the HVDC submarine cable system connecting Västervik on the Swedish mainland with Ygne on Gotland. The company’s turnkey scope for Vattenfall covered design and engineering of the mass‑impregnated HVDC cable system, manufacturing and testing of the subsea and land cables, and their laying and installation along the approximately 98 km route. The original 100 kV, 20 MW Gotland link commissioned in 1954 was subsequently expanded in the 1980s to a 150 kV, 260 MW configuration via additional links, including the 130 MW Gotland 3 circuit commissioned in 1987. Gotland 3 operates in parallel with Gotland 2 as part of this upgraded HVDC scheme, increasing transfer capacity and security of supply between Gotland and the Swedish mainland.
