In 2018, Hitachi Energy was entrusted by Vattenfall, owner of the Gotland HVDC link, to carry out a major upgrade of the onshore converter stations serving the Gotland 2 and Gotland 3 poles. The scope covered design, supply and installation of a new MACH control and protection system, which functions as the central control platform for the HVDC link, together with an upgraded cooling system and a modern operator interface. The upgrade replaced aging converter control and auxiliary equipment, improved fault registration and remote-control capabilities, and enhanced grid reliability and security of supply for Gotland. By modernizing the converter station systems while the link remained in service, Hitachi Energy extended the operational lifetime and availability of the Gotland 3 HVDC connection and enabled greater integration of renewable energy on the island.
