Siemens supplied the SVC PLUS reactive power compensation system and associated voltage-sourced converter (VSC) technology forming the core of the onshore grid connection for the Goliat electrification project. Installed on the Norwegian mainland, this equipment provides dynamic reactive power support for the 106 km AC subsea cable transmitting power from shore to the Goliat FPSO in the Barents Sea. By stabilising voltage and managing the cable’s reactive power, the Siemens system enables reliable operation of the long HVAC link and underpins the platform’s switch from local gas turbines to shore-based electricity, contributing to an estimated 50% reduction in CO2 emissions from power generation at Goliat during the construction/commissioning phase of the electrification scheme.
