The turbine installation campaign at the Global Tech I offshore wind farm was completed in August 2014. By this time, all 80 AREVA AD 5‑116 turbines, each with a capacity of 5MW, had been installed on 900t tripod foundations in around 40m water depth, delivering the project’s full 400MW nameplate capacity. The works formed part of a broader offshore construction programme that also included installation of a 9,000t self‑installing offshore substation platform and inter‑array cabling. Specialist installation vessels such as Hochtief’s Thor, Fred. Olsen Windcarrier’s Bold Tern and Brave Tern, Seajacks Hydra, and Neptune Offshore’s Reef Despina were used to transport and erect the turbine towers, nacelles and rotor stars at the remote site approximately 140km northwest of Bremerhaven/Emden in Germany’s Exclusive Economic Zone.
