Construction of the 400MW Global Tech I offshore wind farm in the German North Sea commenced in August 2012. The project, located about 140km northwest of Bremerhaven/Emden in Germany’s Exclusive Economic Zone and covering roughly 41km² in around 40m water depth, moved from development into physical offshore works at this point. Global Tech I Offshore Wind, a consortium of German municipal utilities and other partners, began implementing the wind farm layout of 80 AREVA AD 5‑116 (formerly M5000‑116) 5MW turbines on tripod foundations, together with a large self‑installing offshore substation and approximately 120km of 33kV inter‑array cables. Subsequent phases of the construction campaign included installation of the transformer station, foundations, turbines and subsea cables using a fleet of heavy‑lift and installation vessels contracted for the project.
