The 400 MW Global Tech I offshore wind farm in the German North Sea officially entered commercial operation in September 2015. Located around 140 km northwest of Bremerhaven/Emden in Germany’s Exclusive Economic Zone, the project comprises 80 AREVA AD 5‑116 (formerly M5000‑116) turbines of 5 MW each on tripod foundations, connected via approximately 120 km of 33 kV inter-array cables to a self-floating offshore substation and then to TenneT’s BorWin Beta converter station. Developed and operated by Global Tech I Offshore Wind, a consortium including Stadtwerke München, ENTEGA, Axpo International and several project developers, the wind farm is designed to generate about 1,400 GWh per year, supplying roughly 445,000 households and avoiding significant CO₂ emissions compared with coal-fired generation.
