On 10 April 2024, Sweden initiated a transboundary Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) consultation under the Espoo Convention for the planned offshore wind farm Gävle Öst, for which Gävle EW AB is the developer. The Finnish Environment Institute acknowledged receipt of the notification and consultation documents, which cover the project’s impacts including those from planned export cables and electricity transmission routes that may cross important trawl fishing areas, prompting Finnish authorities to call for detailed assessment of cable routing and cumulative transmission impacts. This consultation stage is relevant to the Gävle Öst Export transmission system, as it frames how export cable impacts on fisheries and marine environment will be evaluated and whether a separate EIA for the cables will be required.
