Schleswig-Holstein Netz (SH Netz) stated in an official HanseWerk press release dated 5 August 2024 that, after completing jointing works and tests, the new Föhr sea cables will be energized within 2024: "Nach mehreren Tests und Messungen werden die neuen Seekabel dieses Jahr noch in Betrieb gehen." Based on this guidance, commercial operations at full power are projected to commence by the end of 2024.
By 5 August 2024, Schleswig-Holstein Netz (SH Netz) had completed installation of two new subsea power cables between the mainland at Emmelsbüll-Horsbüll and the island of Föhr, replacing aging cables from the 1950s and 1960s. The cables were shipped from a factory in England to Dagebüll, spooled onto the special vessel MS Catjan, and then laid in coordination with the cable-laying vessel "Nessie" in the Wadden Sea.
In late July 2024, Schleswig-Holstein Netz reported that the two new 20 kV subsea cables manufactured by JDR in England were transported by sea to Dagebüll, where in the preceding two weeks each cable was re-spooled onto the specialist vessel MS Catjan, marking delivery of the manufactured cables to port for installation between Emmelsbüll-Horsbüll on the mainland and the island of Föhr.
In mid-2024, Schleswig-Holstein Netz (SH Netz) began installing two new subsea power cables between the mainland near Emmelsbüll-Horsbüll and the island of Föhr, replacing ageing cables from the 1950s and 1960s. According to a 5 August 2024 press release, the cables were laid over the preceding three weeks using the specialist vessel MS Catjan and the plough vessel "Nessie" to modernise and secure the island’s electricity supply and accommodate growing demand and renewable generation.
As part of Schleswig-Holstein Netz's Föhr cable project, four horizontal drillings were completed in summer 2023 to install protection pipes between the Wadden Sea and both the mainland and the island of Föhr, with the final drilling "Festland 2" and associated protection pipe pull-in finished on 2 September 2023, marking the completion of these preparatory civil works.
Onshore construction for the new subsea cable connection between the mainland and the islands including Föhr began in late June 2023, when Schleswig-Holstein Netz (a HanseWerk subsidiary) started the first horizontal drilling operation (“Föhr 1”, 520 m) between 26 and 30 June 2023 near the Toftum substation area as part of six planned boreholes for the new sea cables to Föhr, Oland and Langeneß.
