In early October 2019, Elering energised the new 110 kV Muhu–Orissaare submarine cable in the Väike Väin Strait, with installation works having been carried out in August and the cable energised "this week" relative to the 5 October 2019 announcement. This initial energisation marked the first power flow on the link, duplicating the electricity supply route to Saaremaa and Hiiumaa and significantly improving their security of supply by reducing dependence on the Väinatamm overhead lines.
By 22 August 2019, Elering had begun installation works on the new 110 kV submarine cable between Muhu and Saaremaa in the Väike Väin Strait, marking the start of laying the Muhu–Orissaare link’s subsea section under a project being delivered for Elering by Merko Infra and Connecto with Prysmian-manufactured cable.
By 23 May 2019, Baltic Offshore had been awarded a submarine cable installation contract by the Merko/Connecto consortium for Elering’s Väike Väin Strait 110 kV link between Muhu and Orissaare. The scope for the first Väike Väin installation included pre‑trenching of 4.7 km of cable route and a challenging float‑out and lay operation in very shallow waters for the three‑core AC submarine cable.
For the first Väike Väin Strait 110 kV submarine interconnector between Muhu and Orissaare, Prysmian was selected to manufacture the three‑core AC submarine cable, which was produced at its plant in Finland specifically for this project. Elering later noted that the Muhu–Orissaare submarine cable was built at the Prysmian factory for the new link improving security of supply for Saaremaa and Hiiumaa.
Baltic Offshore reported that it had been awarded the installation contract for the first 110 kV Muhu–Orissaare submarine cable across the Väike Väin Strait, with the Väike Väin scope including pre-trenching of 4.7 km of seabed and a challenging float-out installation in very shallow waters, scheduled to commence in 2019.
Elering completed installation of the Muhu–Orissaare 110 kV submarine cable in the Väike Väin Strait, with Merko Infra and Connecto carrying out the offshore works and the Prysmian plant in Finland supplying the cable, thereby duplicating the electricity supply route and improving security of supply for Saaremaa and Hiiumaa.
Elering has completed and energised the Muhu–Orissaare 110 kV submarine cable in the Väike Väin Strait, putting the new link into operational service to improve the security of electricity supply for Saaremaa and Hiiumaa. The cable, manufactured by Prysmian in Finland and installed by Merko Infra and Connecto, is now in use following completion of installation works and energisation.
