As part of the turnkey HVDC Light order awarded by Kraftnät Åland Ab on 13 December 2012, ABB was contracted to supply and install two 80 kV submarine cables, each 158 km long, for the Finlandskabeln interconnector. The cables form a symmetrical monopole HVDC bipolar pair running between Ytterby on the main island of Åland and Nådendal (Naantali) on the Finnish mainland. Each cable comprises a 630 mm² aluminium conductor and the pair is bundled with a separate fibre-optic cable for control, protection and communications signalling. The cable scope was bundled with two 100 MW, ±80 kV HVDC Light converter stations under the same ~USD 130 million ABB order. The link was scheduled to enter operation in 2015 and entered commercial service in December 2015.
