ABB was awarded a contract by the transmission system operators Svenska Kraftnät and Fingrid Oyj in May 2008 to design, supply and install two onshore HVDC converter stations for the Fenno-Skan 2 interconnector between Sweden and Finland. The new stations at Rauma in Finland and Finnböle in Sweden interface the national 400 kV AC grids with the ±500 kV, 800 MW DC link, extending the original Fenno-Skan 1 connection previously delivered by ABB. ABB’s scope covered overall HVDC system engineering, including detailed converter station design, manufacture and delivery of converter valves, transformers and associated HVDC equipment, and the construction, installation and commissioning of both converter stations, with operation scheduled by the end of 2011.
