Fenno-Skan 1 | Marine / subsea route approx. 200 km, onshore/land route 33 km (total route ~233 km), 500 MW 400 kV HVDC link between Rauma (Finland) and Dannebo (Sweden); supplier listed as ABB.
ABB supplied the original high-voltage direct current (HVDC) system for the Fenno‑Skan 1 interconnector between Finland and Sweden. The scheme, rated around 500 MW at 400 kV, includes converter stations at Rauma in Finland and Dannebo in Sweden and a long-distance transmission system combining subsea and overhead DC sections. ABB’s scope covered design, manufacture and installation of the converter stations and the associated 233 km HVDC transmission link (about 200 km subsea cable across the Gulf of Bothnia and 33 km onshore DC line), enabling the first direct-current submarine connection between the Finnish and Swedish transmission grids when it entered commercial operation in December 1989.
