EstLink 1 ±150 kV, 350 MW HVDC Light interconnector between Harku (Estonia) and Espoo (Finland), using about 105 km of underground and subsea DC cables.
ABB was contracted to deliver the EstLink 1 high-voltage direct current (HVDC) Light interconnector between Estonia and Finland. Its scope covered the manufacturing and installation of the DC conductor/cable system and the two onshore converter "substations" (static inverter plants) at Harku in Estonia and Espoo in Finland. ABB supplied the ±150 kV, 350 MW HVDC Light converter equipment including valves, transformers and associated substation systems, and manufactured the extruded (XLPE) HVDC cables for the approximately 105 km underground and subsea route across the Gulf of Finland. ABB also installed the converter substations and coordinated commissioning so that EstLink 1 could enter commercial operation in 2006 as the first power interconnection between the Baltic and Nordic electricity markets.
