350 MW ±150 kV Estlink HVDC Light link using underground and subsea DC cables over a 105 km route between Estonia and Finland.
Hitachi Energy (then ABB) received a turnkey contract for the entire EstLink 1 HVDC Light interconnector between Estonia and Finland. The scope covered system design and engineering, manufacture and supply of extruded ±150 kV DC cables, and delivery of two onshore converter stations at Harku in Estonia and Espoo in Finland. The 350 MW link, an EU priority project, comprises about 105 km of underground and subsea cable with no overhead sections, enabling the first direct power exchange between the Baltic and Nordic markets. Hitachi Energy’s work included detailed cable design, production of both land and submarine HVDC Light cables, and installation and commissioning of the DC cable system together with the converter stations, completed in around 19 months and brought into service in 2006.
