In the week preceding the early-September 2025 outage, the Estonia–Finland interconnector EstLink 1 was taken out of service for scheduled annual maintenance. Elering, the Estonian electricity and gas transmission system operator, told ERR that the cable had undergone its regular maintenance program "last week," during which EstLink 1 was also out of service due to planned works rather than a fault. This routine operational maintenance was completed shortly before the subsequent technical fault at the Finnish-side converter station reactor that caused the early-September interruption.
