In May 2023, Simply Blue Group signed a partnership deal with EDF Renewables to develop the Western Star and Emerald floating wind projects in Ireland, under an agreement that will establish a 50:50 joint venture, subject to merger clearance, to advance both projects.
On 16 January 2023, Simply Blue Group opened a public consultation on the Scoping Report phase of the Environmental Impact Assessment for the Emerald Offshore Wind Project, which covers the floating wind farm and associated transmission infrastructure including offshore export cables, landfall, onshore export cables and substation connection near Cork. The consultation invites stakeholders and the public to comment on the proposed scope of environmental studies for the project’s offshore and onshore works.
In September 2022, Shell decided to end its involvement in the Emerald Floating Wind Project, bringing to a close the development partnership it had formed with Simply Blue Energy in 2021, although no details were provided on the subsequent disposition of Shell’s 51% stake.

In January 2021, Shell signed an agreement with Simply Blue Energy to acquire a 51% stake in the Simply Blue Energy Kinsale venture, the entity established to develop the 1.3 GW Emerald Floating Wind Project off the south coast of Ireland, changing the ownership structure of the project developer to majority Shell-owned alongside Simply Blue.
