National Grid Electricity Transmission and SP Energy Networks selected Siemens Energy as the preferred bidder to deliver two high‑voltage direct current (HVDC) onshore converter stations for the Eastern Green Link 4 (EGL4) interconnector. The 2 GW link will run between Westfield in Fife, Scotland and the new Walpole B substation in West Norfolk, England, via a 530 km subsea cable and associated onshore cable sections. Siemens Energy’s scope covers the design, supply and construction of the two VSC‑HVDC converter stations that form the terminals of the link and convert power between DC for long‑distance transmission and AC for integration into the GB grid. The appointment follows a competitive procurement process under National Grid’s HVDC supply chain framework and represents a key step towards final contract award ahead of planning approvals and construction, which is expected to start in 2029 with operation around 2033.
