SP Energy Networks and National Grid Electricity Transmission (joint developers) plan the first energisation of the Eastern Green Link 4 (EGL4) HVDC link when the project comes online in 2033. The energisation will follow construction and commissioning of the two converter stations (Fife and Walpole), the subsea and onshore HVDC cable system and connection into the Walpole substation. Construction was indicated to be expected to start in 2029; the link is designed to transmit up to 2 GW over ~530 km of subsea and onshore cable. The timing remains subject to planning consents, procurement and regulatory approvals.
