Design, manufacture, supply, installation, testing and commissioning of a 2 GW, ±525 kV HVDC submarine and underground cable system for Eastern Green Link 3, with an expected total route length of around 680 km comprising subsea and onshore sections between Aberdeenshire (Peterhead/Longside) and Walpole in Norfolk.
NKT was selected as preferred bidder by the joint venture between National Grid Electricity Transmission and Scottish Hydro Electric Transmission for the turnkey 525 kV HVDC cable system on Eastern Green Link 3. The role covers design, manufacture, supply, installation, testing and commissioning of the subsea HVDC cables between Aberdeenshire and the Lincolnshire coast, the onshore HVDC cable links in Scotland and between the Lincolnshire landfall and the Walpole area in Norfolk, associated landfall HDD ducts, accessories, joints and spares, and a long‑term service agreement for the cable systems. The bipole link will provide 2 GW of transfer capacity over an approximately 680 km route, reinforcing Great Britain’s onshore transmission grid between northeast Scotland and eastern England. Based on the bipole configuration (two parallel cables), NKT is expected to supply roughly 1,160 km of subsea HVDC cable and 200 km of onshore HVDC cable for this domestic reinforcement project.
