Hitachi Energy was selected as preferred bidder to deliver the two onshore HVDC converter stations for the Eastern Green Link 3 (EGL3) project, a 2 GW, 525 kV HVDC transmission link between Longside in Aberdeenshire and Walpole in West Norfolk. Under this role, Hitachi Energy is expected to design, manufacture and supply the HVDC converter technology and associated equipment, and support construction, installation and commissioning of the converter stations in Aberdeenshire and West Norfolk. The stations will enable bi-directional conversion between AC and DC, forming the terminals of a roughly 680 km subsea and underground cable system that will transport large volumes of Scottish renewable electricity to demand centres in England. The appointment follows a competitive procurement process run jointly by National Grid Electricity Transmission and SSEN Transmission, and the scope is anticipated to include long-term service support for the converter assets once EGL3 is operational.
