Ofgem set an updated target date of August 2034 for the Eastern Green Link 3 (EGL3) project to be operational; this target covers the onshore converter stations and associated Walpole substation works required to put the link into service. The project is a joint venture between National Grid Electricity Transmission and SSEN Transmission and will include HVDC converter equipment at each end of the link to enable bidirectional 2 GW transfer. The date follows project redesign and regulatory approval of early/pre-construction funding to support land purchase, surveys, design and procurement. This is a planned target date and is subject to planning consents and delivery risks described by the transmission owners and regulator.
