Construction of the Netherton Hub onshore converter and substation complex at Peterhead is expected to commence with main works in the second half of 2026. Aberdeenshire Council granted planning permission in principle in August 2025. Enabling works including tree removal and ground investigations began in February 2026. SSEN Transmission's Netherton Hub page (updated February 2026) states main works are 'scheduled to begin later this year'. The Netherton Hub will house the EGL3 HVDC converter station alongside a 400 kV substation, 132 kV substation, and the Spittal to Peterhead HVDC converter.
