Eastern Green Link 2 is a 525 kV, 2 GW bipole HVDC subsea and underground link between Peterhead in Scotland and Drax in England, with about 436 km of subsea cable and 69 km of underground cable; Prysmian will supply around 1,000 km of HVDC cable for the project and design, manufacture, install, test and commission the complete cable system.
Prysmian Group was awarded a contract worth around €1.9 billion by Eastern Green Link 2 Limited, the SSEN Transmission and National Grid Electricity Transmission joint venture, to deliver the complete HVDC cable system for the Eastern Green Link 2 project. The scope covers design, manufacture, installation, testing and commissioning of a 525 kV, 2 GW bipole HVDC cable link between Peterhead in Aberdeenshire and Drax in North Yorkshire. Prysmian will supply roughly 1,000 km of cable in total, comprising about 436 km of subsea route and 69 km of underground route, corresponding to approximately 872 km of subsea cable and 138 km of land cable for the bipole system. The link will form the UK’s longest HVDC subsea connection and its largest single electricity transmission project, intended to be operational in 2029 and to reinforce the GB transmission network and move Scottish renewable generation to demand centres in England.
