Hitachi Energy was contracted by the Eastern Green Link 2 joint venture to provide the high‑voltage direct current (HVDC) converter stations for the 2 GW, 525 kV EGL2 interconnector between Peterhead in Scotland and Drax in England. Working in consortium with BAM, Hitachi Energy is responsible for the design, engineering and manufacture of the HVDC Light converter technology and associated equipment, and for supporting construction, installation, testing and commissioning of two onshore converter stations at either end of the 436 km subsea and 69 km underground cable system. The converter stations form the terminals of the link, converting direct current from the subsea cable to alternating current for integration into the onshore transmission networks, enabling bulk transfer of Scottish renewable generation to demand centres in England. Construction is scheduled through to targeted operation in 2029.
