BAM Nuttall was appointed, in consortium with Hitachi Energy, to deliver the onshore HVDC converter stations for the Eastern Green Link 2 project. Under this contract, BAM provides civil and balance‑of‑plant engineering, detailed design and construction services for two converter station sites at Peterhead in Aberdeenshire and Drax in North Yorkshire. Its scope includes major civil works, buildings and site infrastructure to house Hitachi Energy’s 525 kV, 2 GW HVDC equipment, as well as supporting installation and commissioning activities. The converter stations will act as the terminals of the 436 km subsea and 69 km underground HVDC cable system, enabling efficient transfer of renewable power from Scotland into the onshore AC transmission networks in Scotland and England. Works are part of the construction phase targeting energisation in 2029.
