Installation of 68 km of underground HVDC land cables between Fraisthorpe Sands and Drax in Yorkshire and an additional 1 km of HVDC land cable at Peterhead, forming the 69 km onshore section of the 525 kV, 2 GW Eastern Green Link 2 HVDC connection.
Balfour Beatty was awarded a subcontract by Prysmian to install the onshore HVDC land cables for the Eastern Green Link 2 project. The company will install approximately 68 km of underground HVDC cables between the Fraisthorpe Sands landfall and Drax in Yorkshire, plus about 1 km of HVDC land cable at Peterhead in Scotland, representing the full 69 km onshore route of the 2 GW, 525 kV link. The cables will be installed underground to minimise visual impact across East Riding of Yorkshire, North Yorkshire and around Peterhead. Working as Prysmian’s installation partner, Balfour Beatty is delivering roughly 15% of the overall cable route, with main works scheduled from early 2025 through to completion in 2029.
