Eastern Green Link 2 (EGL2) is planned to be energised in 2029. The project, delivered as a joint venture between SSEN Transmission and National Grid Electricity Transmission (NGET), will connect Peterhead (Scotland) and Drax (England) via a 505 km HVDC link (436 km subsea, ~69 km underground) with two ±525 kV bipole converter stations. Contractors and suppliers appointed for the link include Hitachi Energy (converter technology), Prysmian (HVDC cable supply and installation) and BAM (civil works). At energisation, the converter stations will enable conversion between AC and DC to permit initial transfer of electricity across the link and integrate EGL2 with the onshore transmission networks; the link is being delivered to meet a targeted commissioning/energisation year of 2029.
