525 kV, 2 GW bipole HVDC link between Torness (East Lothian) and Hawthorn Pit (County Durham), total route about 196 km with approximately 176 km subsea and 20 km onshore land cable, implemented as a bipole with 2 parallel cables.
Eastern Green Link 1 Limited, the joint venture between SP Transmission and National Grid Electricity Transmission, awarded Prysmian Group an approximately €850 million EPC contract to deliver the 525 kV, 2 GW HVDC cable system for the Eastern Green Link 1 interconnector between Torness in East Lothian and Hawthorn Pit in County Durham. Prysmian is responsible for the full design, manufacture, installation, testing and commissioning of the HVDC submarine and land cable system, supplying nearly 400 km of 525 kV HVDC cable for the route (predominantly subsea) plus associated HVAC cable systems connecting the Scottish converter station to the Branxton substation. The scope covers offshore cable laying in the North Sea and underground installation of the onshore sections in Scotland and England, including fibre optics and monitoring systems, with commissioning targeted ahead of the link’s planned 2028–2029 energisation.
