EGL1's Torness converter station and its associated onshore cable installation were scheduled for completion in 2028, after which system testing of the HVDC link was planned to begin. The planned system testing phase will validate end-to-end functionality — including control systems supplied by the chosen HVDC supplier consortium — verify protection and control interfaces with the onshore AC network, and confirm operational performance ahead of commissioning and energisation of the link into the GB transmission system.
