Wetland Surveys Ireland (WSI) provided ecological consultancy services to EirGrid in support of the East West Interconnector (EWIC) Biodiversity Project at the Portan converter station site in County Meath, Ireland. The engagement related specifically to the site biodiversity monitoring programme that EirGrid had established to measure the outcomes of biodiversity enhancements being implemented on land associated with the operating interconnector infrastructure. EirGrid stated that its ecologist developed an outline of the monitoring programme in 2019, and that in 2020 an ecological consultant from Wetland Surveys Ireland refined this monitoring programme. This refinement formed part of the project’s broader environmental and biodiversity initiative, which included management changes to meadow grassland, planting of native trees, habitat features for pollinators, and installation of wildlife monitoring features. WSI’s role therefore supported environmental monitoring and ecology work linked to the Portan site’s biodiversity enhancement actions, helping to improve the design and effectiveness of the measurement programme used to track botanical and habitat outcomes over time.
