Design, manufacture and installation of the b1200 kV HVDC Light sea and land cables for the 500 MW East West Interconnector between Woodland (Ireland) and Deeside (Wales).
EirGrid awarded ABB a major turnkey contract to deliver the 500 MW b1200 kV East West Interconnector between Ireland and Great Britain. The approximately 260 km HVDC Light link connects Woodland (Portan), Co. Meath, to Deeside in North Wales via around 186 km of subsea cable and 70b176 km of underground land cable. ABB was responsible for system engineering and the complete transmission system including design, manufacture and installation of the submarine and land HVDC cables, plus the two converter stations and associated high-voltage equipment. The contract, valued at about US$550 million, covered delivery of the extruded polymeric insulated cable system, converter technology with black-start capability, and commissioning of the interconnector, which entered commercial operation in 2012-13.
