In relation to the 187 km of marine HVDC cable, EIDAC intends to undertake an inspection survey to assess burial condition and changes in protection along the East West Interconnector route between Ireland and Wales.
MMT Sweden AB was contracted by EirGrid to perform an offshore geophysical inspection survey of the East West Interconnector marine cable. The scope covered high-resolution multibeam echo sounder and side-scan sonar surveys along the 187 km HVDC submarine cable route between Ireland and Wales to assess cable burial depth, exposure, sediment mobility and changes in protection and environmental conditions. The 2019 inspection campaign followed an earlier 2015 depth-of-burial survey and supports ongoing maintenance and integrity management of the EWIC subsea cable system.
