Doran Consulting was appointed by ABB as lead design team for the East West Interconnector converter stations. Working for ABB as main contractor, Doran designed the converter and control buildings, AC switchyards and a range of ancillary buildings at the Woodland (Portan, Co. Meath) and Shotton (Flintshire, Wales) sites. Their scope included structural design of the steel-framed station buildings, reinforced-concrete fire walls, roof structures, detailed foundation design for filters and HV equipment, earthing design including closely spaced copper grids, buried conduits and site drainage tied into local authority requirements. The firm provided separate foundation solutions for differing ground conditions in Ireland (pad and strip) and Wales (piled), supporting construction and commissioning of the two 500 MW HVDC converter stations.
