Ellevio’s reinforcement of the electricity supply to Donsö reached full operational capability when the second of two new 8.5 km Nexans subsea power cables from the mainland was commissioned after the summer of 2019, following the first cable’s commissioning in March and its connection to the existing network on the island.
In February 2019, installation of the Donsö Island subsea power cable effectively started when two 8.5‑kilometre cables (17 kilometres in total) were pulled out from the Billdal switchyard towards Donsö in Gothenburg’s southern archipelago, laying new subsea cables on the seabed to replace the old, failure‑prone connection and improve electricity reliability for the islands.
In February 2019, two 8.5 km long Nexans AXCLTV 24 kV subsea power cables were laid in parallel from a switchgear near the shore at Billdal, with the first 250 metres installed in pipes through a horizontally drilled hole under the seabed, and then pulled out across the seabed to Donsö in Gothenburg’s southern archipelago, completing the subsea cable installation for the new electricity supply link to the island. This work forms part of Ellevio’s programme to reinforce the reliability of the electricity network to the southern Gothenburg archipelago.
Nexans Sweden was selected to supply two 8.5‑kilometre AXCLTV 24 kV subsea power cables for Ellevio’s project connecting Billdal on the mainland to Donsö in Gothenburg’s southern archipelago, providing a more reliable electricity supply to the islands as part of a larger programme to lay 41 kilometres of subsea cable in the area.
