Capital support from Greece and the European Union co-financed Phase B of the Cyclades Interconnection, a EUR 68 million project that includes the new 150 kV submarine cable links between Naxos–Paros and Naxos–Mykonos, a new GIS substation on Naxos, and associated reinforcements of the Evia–Andros and Andros–Tinos interconnections; Phase B is explicitly described as part of a subsidised programme for the Cyclades islands’ integration into the mainland grid.

On 19 October 2020, Phase B of the Cyclades interconnection, including the 150 kV AC tripolar submarine cable link between Paros and Naxos and the parallel Naxos–Mykonos link, was officially completed and inaugurated in Naxos. Hellenic Cables, awarded the contract by IPTO in 2018, had designed, manufactured, installed, protected, terminated and tested approximately 52 km of 150 kV XLPE submarine cables with integrated fibre optics for these connections, with manufacturing carried out at its Corinth plant, marking the completion of submarine cable installation for the Paros–Naxos interconnector segment within Phase B.
Phase B of the Cyclades Interconnection, including the 150 kV AC submarine cable links Paros–Naxos and Naxos–Mykonos and the new GIS substation on Naxos, was completed with the interconnection of Naxos to the Hellenic high-voltage transmission system in September 2020, marking the start of full commercial operation of the Naxos–Paros link within the mainland grid. The completion was confirmed by IPTO and followed by an inaugural ceremony in Naxos highlighting the energised connections and the upgrade of the wider Cyclades network.
IPTO’s project documentation records that the new closed-type (GIS) Naxos onshore substation, implemented under Phase B of the Cyclades Interconnection and comprising both system-side (ΥΣ. Σ. 9) and network-side (ΥΣ. Δ. 29) sections, was completed in 2020. This onshore substation forms part of the infrastructure associated with the 150 kV Naxos–Paros link delivered in Phase B.
The European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) awarded capital support to the multi-phase project "The Interconnection of Cyclades Islands with the National Mainland Interconnected Transmission System"—which includes Phase B’s Paros–Naxos and Naxos–Mykonos 150 kV links—contributing about EUR 138.2 million towards a total investment of roughly EUR 389.1 million under Greece’s “Competitiveness, Entrepreneurship” and “Competitiveness, Entrepreneurship and Innovation” operational programmes for 2007–2013 and 2014–2020.

In 2018, IPTO (ADMIE) awarded a contract to the Hellenic Cables–Fulgor consortium to design, manufacture, install, protect, terminate and test about 52 km of 150 kV AC three-core submarine cables with XLPE insulation and integrated fibre optics for Cyclades Phase B, covering the Paros–Naxos and Naxos–Mykonos interconnections and thereby including the Naxos–Paros link.
Licence: State aid approval SA.35695 for the interconnection of the northern Cyclades islands with the National Grid System
On 21 November 2014, the European Commission approved state aid (case SA.35695) for the Greek transmission system operator ADMIE S.A. to construct the Cyclades interconnection system, comprising Phases A, B and C; Phase B includes connecting Naxos to Paros and Paros to Mykonos via 150 kV submarine cables and building a 150/20 kV substation on Naxos, thereby covering the Naxos–Paros interconnector within the aid decision.
Licence: Approval of national public financial support for the Cyclades interconnection project
In September 2014, the Greek Minister of Environment, Energy and Climate Change approved national public financial support for the Cyclades interconnection project, the only scheduled island interconnection at the time; this approval covered the multi‑stage scheme that extends the mainland grid to the Cyclades, including Stage 2/Phase B with the Paros–Naxos 150 kV submarine cable.
Licence: Designation as project of general importance for the economy of the country
On 3 January 2011, Ministerial Decision No. FA/E 3.2/57/3 formally designated the project "Interconnection of Cyclades islands with the National Mainland Interconnected Transmission System" as a project of "general importance for the economy of the country", confirming its strategic priority; this umbrella decision applies to all phases of the Cyclades scheme, including Phase B’s Paros–Naxos high‑voltage link.
Licence: Designation of Cyclades Interconnection as project of greater general importance for the country’s economy
In November 2006, the Greek government issued a ministerial decision designating the Cyclades Interconnection project—which involves linking Syros, Mykonos, Paros and Naxos to the Hellenic Electricity Transmission System and reinforcing the Andros–Tinos connection—as a project of "greater general importance for the country’s economy", thereby granting it priority status; this framework covers Phase B, including the 150 kV Paros–Naxos cable.
