Cyclades Phase B’s Naxos–Mykonos 150 kV AC three‑core submarine cable (about 40 km, 140 MVA) entered full operation in September 2020, when IPTO completed Phase B and interconnected Naxos with the Hellenic high‑voltage transmission system, closing the Paros–Naxos–Mykonos loop and providing double supply to these islands for improved security of electricity supply and reduced reliance on local generation.
IPTO states that Phase B of the Cyclades Interconnection, which includes construction of a new 150 kV GIS substation on Naxos and the necessary interconnection works at Paros and Mykonos substations, was completed in September 2020 with the interconnection of Naxos to the High Voltage System, indicating that the Naxos onshore substation was commissioned and brought into operational service by that time for the Naxos–Mykonos 150 kV link.
Hellenic Cables reports that its turnkey contract for Phase B of the Cyclades interconnection—covering the design, manufacturing, installation, protection, termination works and testing of approximately 52 km of 150 kV AC three-core submarine cables linking Paros–Naxos and Naxos–Mykonos to the National Transmission System—was successfully completed in 2020, implying that system testing of the Naxos–Mykonos link was finalised by that year.
In 2020, Asso.subsea began cable installation activities for the Cyclades Project – Phase B (Naxos–Mykonos), carrying out cable transpooling, landing and free-laying of a 1×150 kV HVAC XLPE 3×300 mm² Cu submarine power cable for contractor Fulgor S.A. and transmission operator ADMIE (IPTO), over a laying length of about 45.6 km with associated trenching and protection works.
By 2020, the submarine cable installation for the Cyclades Project – Phase B (Naxos–Mykonos) was completed, with Asso.subsea performing cable transpooling, landing and free-laying of a 150 kV HVAC XLPE cable for ADMIE (IPTO), and Hellenic Cables listing the Paros–Naxos, Naxos–Mykonos interconnection as a project executed over 2018–2020. These references indicate that all planned submarine cable works for the Naxos–Mykonos interconnection were finished by 2020.
By the end of June 2018, IPTO selected the Hellenic Cables SA – Fulgor SA consortium to supply and install the high‑voltage submarine cables for Cyclades Interconnection Phase B, including the 150 kV AC three‑core submarine link between Naxos and Mykonos (and the parallel Paros–Naxos link). Contracts for these cable works, covering design, manufacturing, installation, protection, termination and testing of about 52 km of cable, were then signed in July and August 2018.
At the end of June 2018, IPTO selected NARI Group Corporation (with Elektromek S.A. as partner) as contractor for the new 150 kV GIS substation on Naxos associated with Cyclades Interconnection Phase B, which enables operation of the Naxos–Mykonos and Paros–Naxos 150 kV cable links. The related contracts for the Naxos substation works were subsequently signed in July and August 2018.
Onshore construction of the new 150 kV GIS substation on Naxos, part of the Second Phase of the Cyclades interconnection to close the loop between Paros, Naxos and Mykonos, started in 2018 under an EPC contract awarded by IPTO (ADMIE) to the Electromec SA – NARI Group Corporation consortium.
Licence: EU state aid measure SA.35695 granting aid to ADMIE for the Cyclades Islands interconnection project (Phases A, B and C)
On 21 November 2014, the European Commission issued documentation for state aid case SA.35695 describing a notified measure to grant aid to the Greek transmission system operator ADMIE S.A. for constructing the interconnection of the autonomous electric systems of the northern Cyclades islands with the mainland grid. The measure covers the Cyclades interconnection in three phases (A, B and C), including Phase B’s submarine 150 kV cables between Naxos and Paros and between Paros and Mykonos and the 150/20 kV substation on Naxos, which together establish the high‑voltage link serving the Naxos–Mykonos corridor.
Licence: Ministerial Decision No. FA/E 3.2/57/3 designating the Interconnection of Cyclades Islands with the National Mainland Interconnected Transmission System as a project of “general importance for the economy of the country”
On 3 January 2011, Ministerial Decision No. FA/E 3.2/57/3 of the Hellenic Ministry of Economy & Development formally named the project "Interconnection of Cyclades Islands with the National Mainland Interconnected Transmission System" as a project of "general importance for the economy of the country". This legal act reaffirmed the strategic status of the multi-phase Cyclades interconnection, which includes Phase B’s Naxos–Mykonos 150 kV submarine link between the islands within the overall scheme.
